What are Essential Energy's responsibilities?

Private power pole on a property

Essential Energy is responsible for maintaining and repairing the electricity network to the connection point located on private land.

Provisions under the Electricity Supply Act 1995 and Electricity Supply (Safety and Network Management) Regulation 2014 also allow Essential Energy’s asset inspectors and field employees to access your property to undertake regular ground-based patrols of consumer mains and sub-mains that are continuously connected to consumer mains/service mains. The inspectors also complete a visual above-ground inspection of these assets.

If a defect is identified, Essential Energy will send you notification of the work required to rectify this and the timeframe in which it must be done.

If an unsafe situation is detected and not rectified in a timely manner, statutory provisions enable Essential Energy to disconnect the installation, or parts thereof.
