Gary Wimbus, one of our training team, is celebrating winning the 2020 North and Mid North Coast Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year award, which puts him in contention for the New South Wales and possibly the Australian Training Awards. Gary is also in the running to win the People’s Choice Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander – you can read why Gary was nominated and add your vote to his tally.

As a learning and development specialist helping build workforce capacity at Essential Energy, Gary recently completed a Diploma of Business Administration at TAFE.

Combining a busy working and home life, the dad-of-two also said "It can be very challenging at times to balance both studying and working. There are a lot of flexible study methods available which help to assist, so choosing an education provider that suited my situation and needs helped a lot. With all of my study achievements I've had great support from family, my team, and Essential Energy as a whole. My wife Jharna also consistently managed the house and children workloads so that I had more time to study.”

Gary is a proud recipient, saying “It’s very humbling to be recognised for all the hard work and commitment that I've put in over the past 10 years. Its been a big journey thus far, and I can't wait to see what the future may bring.”

True to his role as a mentor to others, Gary encourages anyone who’s thinking about additional learning “I would say go for it. There will be doubts on how to manage the additional workload, so its important to surround yourself with people who support and encourage you. For me, it’s about making decisions in the present that will positively influence my future. Education and study has done that for me.“

Best wishes for October Gary.
