Do you desire a career in heavy vehicles and mobile plant maintenance whilst working as part of a crew? A Mechanical Fleet Apprenticeship could be your perfect career opening.

By completing our Mechanical Fleet Apprenticeship, you will gain the qualifications, skills and experience to become a Mechanical Fleet Technician. As part of the Fleet Team, you will help to maintain, deliver and support the mobile and fixed fleet assets that our field crews use to maintain safe and reliable power across 95 per cent of NSW.

The four-year apprenticeship combines formal TAFE training with on-the-job experience. Based in state-of-the-art workshops, you will work on a variety of fleet assets, including heavy vehicles, elevated work platforms, mobile cranes, heavy and light vehicles, and electric vehicles.

Qualifications you will gain and what you will learn

You will have access to the latest training to ensure your skills and knowledge are at the forefront of the industry. You will complete a Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology, which includes subjects in hydraulics, electrical components, operation, and work health and safety - a strong foundation to power your career.

You will work in a team of qualified and highly skilled Mechanical Fleet Technicians who are passionate about safety, and ensuring the fleet is maintained at the highest level. You will gain valuable on-the-job training in the areas of plant safety practices, operation and maintenance of heavy plant.

Skills and knowledge you will obtain include:

  • Operation, maintenance and repair of heavy vehicles and plant
  • Diagnosis and maintenance of hydraulic systems
  • Understanding of electrical wiring diagrams and repairs
  • Opportunity to undertake high risk work licences in mobile cranes and elevated work platforms
  • Operational requirements for electric vehicles
  • Interaction with fleet asset management tools and systems
  • Quality assurance of light commercial fleet requirements
  • Customer service

How much will I earn as an Apprentice?

Apprentice - under 21 years^ $674.58 $107.93 $782.51
Apprentice - 21 years and over $1,342.77 $214.84 $1,557.61

Note: Rate as of 1 July 2023, with yearly CPI changes in line with the relevant Enterprise Agreement.
*Allowances are paid in addition to this amount. All costs associated with travelling for training and work are paid for by Essential Energy.
^Pay progression occurs at the end of each year of apprenticeship.
