Essential Energy will undertake pre-feasibility work to assess potential microgrid and battery storage solutions for some of the most remote communities in Far West NSW, supported by $3 million in NSW Government funding. 

The program will investigate whether there are opportunities to improve energy resilience in White Cliffs, Tibooburra, Milparinka and Packsaddle through a combination of local solar generation and battery storage solutions that could help support these communities during power outages.

Essential Energy Chief Assets and Digital Officer, Luke Jenner, said the pre-feasibility studies would assess the potential for solutions in towns on the edge of the electricity grid.

"This pre-feasibility work is an important first step in assessing whether local solar generation and battery storage can provide a more resilient, practical and sustainable solution for communities including White Cliffs, Tibooburra, Milparinka and Packsaddle,” he said.

"Essential Energy understands the challenges of supplying reliable power to some of the most remote communities in NSW, where long distances, extreme weather and fuel supply lines can all affect energy security.”

Under the new program, Essential Energy will investigate the potential for a solar-powered microgrid for White Cliffs and how solar power and batteries could complement Tibooburra’s existing diesel-backed system to improve network reliability and security.

It also includes exploring options for battery storage opportunities in Milparinka and Packsaddle.

The study will identify and assess potential options for each location, with findings to be provided to the NSW Government before any decision is made on progressing future phases of the project.

Executive Director Energy Infrastructure at the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Liam Ryan, said the project formed part of broader efforts to strengthen electricity reliability in Far West NSW following the October 2024 disruptions.

"These microgrid projects could improve energy security, reduce reliance on diesel and help communities stay connected when they need it most,” he said.

"Partnering with Essential Energy is one of several initiatives underway to improve electricity services in Far West NSW."

As part of the project, Essential Energy will work with First Nations communities to identify, develop and deliver meaningful economic opportunities which deliver lasting benefits across the region.

The NSW Government-backed program follows Essential Energy's recent work to develop renewable microgrid solutions for Wilcannia and Sunset Strip/Menindee, backed by funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
