Local leaders advocating for regional communities in the energy transition

22 August 2025

As renewable energy projects continue to reshape regional landscapes, local leaders like Louise Halsey and Diana Palmer are stepping up to ensure their communities are not only heard but actively involved in the developments that impact their region.

Louise and Diana from the Community Foundation Snowy Valleys recently joined 90 regional and rural leaders from across Australia at the Regional Leaders Summit held in Newcastle, August 5, to share experiences and explore how communities can better participate in and benefit from the renewable energy transition.

The Summit hosted by RE-Alliance brought together leaders working in local government, regional development and community organisations. Over two days participants shared experiences, practical solutions, and important conversations aimed at strengthening outcomes for their regions.

Louise and Diana made an important contribution to the Summit and offered valuable insights from the Snowy Valleys, highlighting the important role of community foundations in advocating for fair and transparent benefit fund management and ensuring regional voices are actively involved in renewable energy planning.

Louise and Diana’s attendance was supported by a sponsorship from Essential Energy to enable their participation.

“The bursary from Essential Energy was so terrific, it freed us to attend and have a great time meeting everyone. The follow-up and connections we’ve made around the regions are invaluable. We’ve come away with new ideas, stronger relationships, and a clearer understanding of how we can support our region through the energy transition,” said Louise, Chair of the Community Foundation Snowy Valleys.

The Community Foundation Snowy Valleys is a philanthropic organisation supporting initiatives in disaster recovery, youth development, mental health. It plays a growing role in advocating for fair and transparent management of renewable energy community benefit funds, ensuring that financial contributions from developers are directed toward projects that reflect local priorities. The Foundation also advocates for appropriate compensation for local governments, recognising the impacts that renewable energy developments can have on community infrastructure and services.

Importantly, the Foundation advocates for its community to be heard in energy planning conversations, helping ensure regional voices are represented and that communities receive the maximum benefit from renewable energy developments.

According to Essential Energy’s Head of Stakeholder Relations, Mitchell Hume, the sponsorship enabled Louise and Diana to participate in key discussions with stakeholders in their region, contributing to better relationships and shared understanding across sectors.

“The Community Foundation Snowy Valleys is doing incredible work to ensure their communities benefit from the energy transition. We’re proud to support their efforts and the voices of community leaders across regional, rural and remote New South Wales.,” Mitchell said.

Louise and Diana’s participation highlights the importance of regional leadership and collaboration in shaping a fair and inclusive energy future.
