Apprentice Recruitment Process

Electrical Technician

There are six steps in the apprentice recruitment process.

Step 1: Application form & numerical assessment

Your first step in the process is to complete an application online. You'll also need to submit a resume and provide details of previous work experience and referees. Application forms will be available only between the specified recruitment drive dates. Once you have applied, you will be emailed an invitation to complete an online numerical assessment that can be done in your own time. You must complete the assessment by the application closing date. Results will remain confidential to Essential Energy.

Step 2: Online Safety and Mechanical Reasoning Assessment

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a second online assessment focusing on safety and mechanical reasoning. You will receive an email inviting to you complete the assessment within a certain timeframe. Please allow up to 50 minutes to complete.

Step 3: Assessment Centre Day

The next stage in the process, for those who are successful, is to be invited to attend an assessment day in a regional centre. This could include areas such as Coffs Harbour, Ballina, Dubbo, Tamworth, Queanbeyan, Wagga Wagga, or various other Essential Energy depots dependent on numbers and locations.

The day is broken down into three activities.

  • Readiness assessment
  • Practical assessment
  • Interview

There's no need to study for these tests. Practice tests are available by searching online if you would like to refresh your skills or use the practice test. These tests measure your abilities as they relate to the role of an electrical industry technical employee. Results will be kept confidential and will not be provided to applicants once completed.

You will also hear from our apprentice group and the recruiting managers about what you can expect as an Essential Energy apprentice. This is a great opportunity to ask as many questions as you like about being an apprentice, studies, travel or the recruitment process.

Step 4: Reference checking

You will be asked to provide us with the names and contact details of two referees who can tell us about your school and/or work performance and experience, as part of your initial application. With your permission, we'll speak to these people about your performance as it relates to the position.

Step 5: Pre-employment Assessments

If you’re successful you will be subject to Essential Energy’s pre-employment assessments. You will be asked to complete a pre-employment medical examination with one of our preferred doctors. This medical will ensure that you are fit for the work for which you have applied, in addition to ensuring Essential Energy does not place you in an unsafe environment due to any possible medical condition that you may have.

You will also be asked to complete a criminal history record check.

Final Step: Appointment

If you're successful, we'll phone you and offer you the apprenticeship confirming your start date, followed by an electronic offer. When you start, you'll complete our induction program to help you become more familiar with our organisation. Once that's completed, your apprenticeship training will truly begin.
