Essential Energy’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) John Cleland joined EnergyCo CEO James Hay, Professor Renate Egan, and Armidale Regional Council Mayor Sam Coupland on a discussion panel about electrification at the University of New England (UNE) on Monday 30 October.

The energy transition, regional electrification opportunities, and the proposed Renewable Energy Zone for the New England region featured in the CleanTech Futures Series event. It was a chance for researchers, community members, and businesses to learn more about the potential of renewable energy generation connected to both Renewable Energy Zones and existing regional electricity distribution networks.

John spoke about the economics of a Renewable Energy Zone, the crucial part the grid plays in the energy transition, and the opportunities for residential and commercial electrification.

Transitioning from gas to electric is a major component of the energy transition and is part of Essential Energy’s Corporate Strategy. Supporting customers to achieve their decarbonisation goal is a key driver for the organisation.

The event was funded by the NSW Government through the Accelerating Regional Innovation Fund and delivered with support from Armidale Regional Council. The CleanTech Futures Series focuses on promoting clean technology and sustainable energy solutions. It brings industry leaders, researchers, and community stakeholders together to discuss and collaborate on the pressing issues and aims to encourage working together to build a more sustainable future.
